Saving Sea Turtles is a Marathon, Not a Sprint

Turtle Bio Page

Hey there! My name is Nevada! I was turtley stoked when my friends at Florida Leatherbacks, Inc. chose me to join the Tour de Turtles! I already have more than 30 years of migration experience under my flippers, so they knew I was the best choice to join them in the race and help raise awareness about commercial longline fisheries. Throughout my years of traveling the globe, I’ve seen a lot of amazing things, but commercial longline fisheries are one of the scariest things I’ve come across! Each year, hundreds of thousands of adult and juvenile sea turtles are accidentally captured in fisheries. I’ve been lucky that I haven’t gotten stuck in one yet, but it would be very easy for turtles like me to get hooked or trapped. To make sure sea turtles and other marine life don’t get accidentally captured, it’s important to only eat sustainably sourced seafood and support companies and countries that use Turtle Excluder Devices on their boats. I plan on exploring some new territory this year, so flippers crossed I don’t run into any trawl fisheries during my travels! Wish me luck!

I was named by my Sponsor, Florida Leatherbacks, Inc. & Florida Sea Turtle License Plate. Check out my marathon migration map, where you can follow along as I swim to raise awareness about the threat of Commercial Longline Fisheries to sea turtles. Please help me raise awareness about my cause by supporting me!
