Using the Tour de Turtles Google Maps

Getting to Know Google Maps

The following diagram describes some of the features of the Tour de Turtles Google Maps.

1. Views – Click these to display different background views, including aerial images and terrain imagery.

2. Navigation controls – Use this to navigate.

3. Map – This area displays the map.

4. Info window – This window displays additional information when you click on a marker.

Navigating in Google Maps

You can navigate (move your view) in two dimensions in any Google Map. To pan (move the map), click and drag the map. To center and zoom in on a location, double right click the location. To center and zoom out of a location, double left click the location.

Using the Navigation Controls

The navigation controls you see on he maps are shown on the left. Navigation controls include:

  1. Arrows - Click the appropriate arrow buttons to move the view north, south, east or west. Click Center button to return to your original view.

  2. Zoom – Click + to zoom in on the center of the map. Click – to zoom out.

  3. Zoom slider – Drag the zoom slider up or down to zoom in or out incrementally.

 

About Markers

Markers signify a location. On the Tour de Turtles maps, different types of markers include:

Location Marker This marker indicates a turtle location point. Clicking this marker opens an info window with the date of the location.
Bonus Marker This marker indicates a turtle location point with additional content. Clicking this marker opens an info window with the date of the turtle’s location and additional bonus content, such as links, images or animations.
Marathon Start Marker This marker indicates the turtle’s location at the start of the Tour de Turtles marathon. Clicking this marker opens an info window with the marathon start date.
Current Location Marker This marker indicates the turtle’s current location. Clicking this marker opens an info window with the most recent location date. There is a different marker for each sea turtle species being tracked.
