Oh hello there! I’m Ariel. Unlike my namesake I don’t want to be where the people are. I would prefer to relax around my dark grotto and snack on yummy crustaceans. I still have to come ashore to make a nest for my babies every few years though. I have to be really picky about where I nest, because sometimes my babies get confused by all the lights along the beach. Vero Beach is my favorite spot to nest for many reasons. One of those is because Disney’s Vero Beach Resort installed sea turtle-friendly lighting for me! But many beachfront hotels and condos still have bright, white lights. While I’m nesting, there are also people carrying those bright thingamabobs…What are they called? Oh yeah, flashlights. What are the other gizmos called? That’s right, shell phones I think. Although lights make humans feel safer they make me scared for my babies, because they may mistake those gadgets as the moon leading them back home. So next time you come to the beach at night for a visit please just let your eyes adjust to the low light and leave all the gadgets dark.

I was named by my Sponsor, Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment & Disney's Vero Beach Resort.
