Well hello there! My name is Angel. I was named by my sponsor, DivinityLA. They have promised to watch over me and be my guardian angel of sorts during the Tour de Turtles. Now why would I need a guardian angel? Well during the race, I am hoping to raise awareness about a cause that is near and dear to my heart, which is the threat of poaching. Although we sea turtles have spiritual or mythological importance in many cultures around the world, this has not prevented humans from consuming our eggs or meat. In many coastal communities, especially in Central America and Asia, sea turtles are considered a food source. During the nesting season, hunters comb the beaches at night looking for nesting females like me. In some countries, sea turtle eggs are prized as an aphrodisiac, which is just absurd. Others customarily consume sea turtle meat in observance of religious holidays, which sounds blasphemous to me! So join me throughout the Tour de Turtles as I try to put an end to the consumption of sea turtle meat and eggs! Just because I may seem nice and angelic, don’t count me out. I plan on flying through this race like the Angel that I am!
